processed foods
——
The word “processed” often causes some confusion, so let me clarify what I mean.
——
Obviously, most foods we eat are processed in some way. Apples are cut from trees, ground beef has been ground in a machine and butter is cream that has been separated from the milk and churned.
——
But there is a difference between mechanical processing and chemical processing.
If it’s a single ingredient food with no added chemicals, then it doesn’t matter if it’s been ground or put into a container. It’s still real food.
——
However, foods that have been chemically processed and made solely from refined ingredients and artificial substances, are what is generally known as processed food.
——
So let’s look at processed foods in a bit more detail. As a general rule, if you can’t spell it, don’t eat it. For those of you with great spelling, here is some more information about them.
——
A lot of food is processed to give it a longer shelf life, but the chemicals added to do this compromise the human body’s structure and function as well as impact the development of skin, blood, and emotional conditions. Coronary heart disease, diabetes, strokes, and cancer have all been linked to processed food consumption.
——
Unfortunately due to the hectic world we live in and how readily available they are in supermarkets, we are consuming them in such high quantities. Also supermarkets generally have special offers on these types of foods which helps when shopping on a budget.
——
Often its the cheaper supermarket foods that contain more processed ingredients. A lot of companies will claim that their unhealthy food products have reduced fat or sugars, but this just means they are higher in other additives and preservatives. Also for the body to process these ingredients it uses up vital nutrients in the body, nutrients which should be doing other important things for you.
——
A simple way to see if a food is heavily processed is by looking at the product label. It should have no more than 5 ingredients on it. Also, if you don’t recognise any of the ingredients, then it has definitely been processed.
——
Cutting out these food leads to a variety of personal health benefits, such as having more energy; losing weight; improving regularity and feeling healthier overall.

——
You are in charge of what goes in (and what goes out of) your body, so make the right choices. The healthier you eat, the better you will feel.
——
Remember if you can’t spell it, don’t eat it. Train hard, eat right and enjoy the journey.
